Amazon’s Firestick and the Roku technology have made streaming media easier for users, making both of them very appealing to smart homeowners. Choosing between the two may become confusing at times. Most users want the best of both of them and often try to find a way to make both work together.
Firestick and Roku TV have slightly different features, which makes choosing hard and raises the want to try to combine the benefits of both. Let’s take an in-depth approach towards understanding both these devices and how they can work together.

If I have a Roku TV do I need a Firestick?
You can use a Firestick with a Roku TV, but that is not really necessary. Your Roku TV would come pre-loaded with an Amazon Prime Video application on purchase. All you need to do is switch on the TV, log in to your Amazon Prime account and start watching.
You can use your Firestick on your Roku TV, but it is also important to highlight that it is not required. Your Roku TV would work just fine without a Firestick, allowing you to access numerous Roku channels. However, adding a Firestick may broaden the capacity of your access to subscriptions (this may come at a cost, though).
Firestick Vs. Roku TV- what is the difference?
Below are some of the noteworthy differences you need to be aware of before investing in either of the two devices. I have listed the five most relevant ones.
Firestick | Roku TV | |
Voice Control | Comes with Amazon’s Alexa voice control feature. | Comes with a voice control assistant but is not as efficient as Alexa. |
Interface | More complicated, mainly because it is associated with Prime Video (it may be time-consuming, requires a subscription, and navigation may be challenging). | Fairly uncomplicated to use with a simple, easy-to-operate interface. All subscriptions are available on the home screen. |
Data Efficiency | Data usage is higher than others. | Uses 4x less data than Firestick. |
Features | Comes with numerous features supports many applications, and is available in many different regions worldwide. | Limited features and applications available. |
Flexibility | Users can have many subscriptions and even link them to other smart devices (tablets, smartphones, etcetera). | Limited access: users can only play Roku channels only on Roku devices. |
Can you use Firestick on a Roku TV?
Yes, you can use a Firestick on Roku TV. Even though both of them work quite similarly so, you may not need both of them simultaneously. However, you can use both of them together using an existing/extra HDMI port on your TV with a few other tweaks to the hardware and software (manually switching between remotes and inputs, etcetera).
How to connect Firestick to Roku TV?
Connecting the two is a fairly simple process. Here is what you need to do and how to operate your TV after making the connection (I will start by adding your Firestick to your Roku TV with a distinguishable name for better and easy access). Follow my lead and get it done in just 4 steps:
Step 1: Using the HDMI port
Locate the extra HDMI port on your Roku TV and plug the Firestick in it.
Step 2: Setting up input
Open your Roku TV settings and scroll down. Select TV Inputs and then HDMI.Then select Setup Input. This will create an icon for your HDMI port on the home screen of your Roku TV.
Step 3: Renaming the HDMI input
Go back to Settings, then to TV Inputs and HDMI again. Choose Rename from the options displayed on the right side of your TV screen. Select Edit Custom Name & Icon and set up a name/icon of your choice for your Firestick.
Step 4: Accessing Firestick on Roku TV
Go back to the home screen of your TV, where you will find the icon you set for your Firestick with your customized name. Simply click on the icon to access all of Amazon’s Firestick on your Roku TV. Now, you can access Netflix, Hulu TV, and many other streaming platforms that come with the Firestick!
Note: You will need to switch remotes and use the Firestick’s controller once the display shows the Firestick’s screen. Try to be comfortable using two remotes if you wish to make this work.
How to connect Firestick to TV without HDMI port?
An Amazon Firestick needs to be plugged into an HDMI port in order to be connected to any compatible TV. Many modern TVs now come with built-in HDMI ports, but there is still a way to go about it if yours does not have one.
You can attach an external device to your Firestick and TV to create an HDMI extension. Here is what you need to do to connect Firestick to a TV without an HDMI port:
Step 1: Buy an HDMI to composite/component converter
This small box allows you to use your analog (non-HDMI) TV with a device that requires an HDMI port connection. It comes with a built-in HDMI port.
Step 2: Plug the Firestick into a power outlet
Use the USB converter provided to turn on your Firestick.
Step 3: Connect the Firestick to the converter
Simply insert the Firestick in the converter as you would do with a normal HDMI port.
Step 4: Connect the converter to the TV
Connect the converter’s cable to the TV (it comes with AV or composite cables). Insert this cable into the video input.
Step 5: Select the appropriate input on the TV
Access the Input Settings menu. From there, choose the input that you connected your converter to.
And you are done! Following the above steps, you can create an HDMI extension for your TV and connect your Firestick to it. If you have a Roku TV, follow the steps mentioned previously to connect your Firestick to your Roku TV.

Can I connect Firestick to TV without HDMI port?
No, you cannot insert a Firestick into a TV without an HDMI port. If your TV does not have an extra HDMI port or not one at all, you can use an external device (an HDMI to composite/component converter) to create an HDMI extension port. These ports can be found and bought easily.
Why is my TV not picking up my Firestick?
It could be that your Firestick is not inserted correctly into the port or that its battery is not fully charged. Ensure that the Firestick is inserted fully and charged sufficiently using the USB adapter provided.
Does Roku replace Firestick?
Both of these work independently in a similar manner but differ in terms of the features and benefits they come with. Firestick would be considered a better option (for Amazon users) due to its variety in subscriptions and flexibility. They can also be used together using an HDMI port connection.
Wrapping up my thoughts on whether Firestick can work with Roku TV!
A Firestick can definitely work with a Roku TV, but it does not really need to. If you have some extra cash (and the capacity to adjust to switching between remotes), I would say you should go for it! Combining the power and features of both of these has the potential to enhance your streaming experience.
Before making a decision, it might be better to do your research and see what works for you, as not everyone looks at things the same. For example, a user interface that may seem complicated to one user may seem easy and more appealing to another.
Hence, it all comes down to you; what features you want and what device you are comfortable operating.
